Nestled on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain in the Stellenbosch wine region lies this beautiful estate of 50 hectares. Known for consistently producing wines of high quality, Rust en Vrede (pronounced "rusten-free-der") is today considered to be one of the finest estates in South Africa when it comes to the making of truly great red wines.
Established in 1694, Springbok rugby legend, Jannie Engelbrecht and his wife, Ellen, bought the run-down estate at the end of 1977 and immediately made it their goal to restore the estate to its former glory. Jannie was one of the first winemaker/proprietors to specialize in the exclusive production of red wine and his philosophy behind it was very simple. “I want to make wine that I love drinking.” From the very first vintage, Rust en Vrede has received superior or gold medal ratings every year to date.
